Architect and designer Bořek Šípek graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and after graduating he emigrated to Germany, where he studied architecture in Hamburg and also became interested in philosophy, theatre and stage design. He wanted to become an art and design critic. After studying philosophy in Stuttgart, he taught design theory at the University of Hannover. In 1983 he moved to Amsterdam, where he set up his own studio. At the end of the 1980s he established contacts with Czech glassmakers, and in 1990 he took over the design studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. In the 1980s and 1990s, he established cooperation with leading European companies, which realised his experimental designs (e.g. Vitra and Driade). In 1989 he co-founded the glass company Ajeto near Nový Bor. Between 1990 and 1998 he was a teacher at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and between 1992 and 2002 he was simultaneously the chief architect of the Prague Castle Administration.

The Leonora vase bears his distinct style, revealing inspiration of the Czech glassmaking tradition in the application of Baroque-like elements. He was fascinated by the technological bravura of historical periods, Baroque drama and sensuality, three-dimensional ornamental techniques, and was also inspired by Josip Plečnik and his designs from his time at Prague Castle.
